Welcome to Golden Learning Centre

Golden Learning Centre Public School is located in the mining community of Balmertown. We serve the communities of Balmertown, Cochenour, McKenzie Island, and the northern side of the Chukuni River subdivision.

We are committed to providing students with authentic and relevant learning experiences beginning in Kindergarten and continuing throughout their elementary years. We endeavour to connect our students to the real world and to see themselves as citizens of their school community and eventually the world they will live and work in. Golden Learning Centre has continued to engage in their multi-year commitment to being Eco-Certified through the EcoSchools Canada program. This grassroots initiative is a significant accomplishment that has been achieved through the dedicated efforts of staff, students and parent volunteers. With a focus on improvement in waste management, energy consumption, and greening our school grounds, we are reminding and teaching our students to be stewards of the land.

Our parents can’t say enough about our Kindergarten programs and are amazed at all their children are learning. We celebrate our students’ natural curiosity and often take their learning outside, making use of our outdoor classroom and school garden. Our dedicated staff go above and beyond for our students, allowing their interests to guide learning throughout the school day. GLC’s Kindergarten is a great start to a lifelong learning journey!

Our Awesome Programs!

Eco School

We have been a certified Eco School for many years at GLC! Eco Schools is an environmental education program where our students develop both ecological literacy and environmental practices. Our Eco Team organizes numerous activities and initiatives for our school throughout the year.

Biannual Performing Art Production

We are incredibly proud of our whole-school, biannual production. Our students and staff spend months and months preparing for this event, including elaborate costumes and sets. Every child has an opportunity to participate and learn valuable skills throughout the process.

School Garden

Our school garden allows our students to take their learning outside. Working as a team, students learn about growing their own fruits and vegetables, harvesting what they have grown, and even preserving the produce!

Full-Day Kindergarten

OPHEA Healthy Schools

This program recognizes and celebrates school communities for promoting and enhancing the health and well-being of students, school staff, and the broader community through a variety of activities and initiatives. We are very proud to be the first school board in Ontario to register all of our schools for OPHEA’s Healthy Schools Certification.
Eye See... Eye Learn logo

Eye See... Eye Learn

This is a not-for-profit program designed to detect, diagnose and treat children with vision problems when they begin Junior Kindergarten (Year 1), so that every child can see and learn to the best of his/her ability. Local Doctors of Optometry provide OHIP-insured eye exams, and if prescribed, the child receives a free pair of eyeglasses donated by the program’s eyewear partners.

Music Program

The dramatic arts play a significant role in GLC’s school community. With music integrated into classroom instruction, important events (ie. Remembrance Day ceremonies) and our biannual production, students have ample opportunity to develop lifelong appreciation for all genres of music.

French as a Second Language

With the help of our French teacher, students at GLC come to understand that acquiring a second language can benefit them. French lessons are interactive with students learning to read, write and converse with their peers and teacher. Our partnership with Association Francophone de Red Lake means students can also interact with French-speaking individuals at school events. We’re proud of our commitment to second language and love seeing our students’ excitement as they learn new words and phrases!

GLC is proud to work in partnership with various organizations both locally and nationally. Our students learn so much through the work educators do to connect them with their interests, our local history and potential careers. These community partners include the Red Lake Indian Friendship Centre, Evolution Red Lake, the Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre and various other local businesses. In addition to this, GLC students also access learning through Connected North, a leading-edge program that delivers high-quality content to schools across Canada. Our learning goes well beyond the walls of our classrooms through the various individuals and organizations that we connect with!
